Xiphophorus Working Group founded

Several participants of the ÖVVÖ Xiphophorus - Northern Platyfish project have participated in the foundation of new Xiphophorus Working Group in Ostrava Zoo on 1.-3.10.2021. This new initiative aims to create secure ex situ (captive) populations of all Xiphophorus species with different degree of urgency.

We build upon the experience from the XNP project, where we were able to create a network of passionate breeders and significantly increase the ex situ populations of endangered platyfish. We were also successful in spreading the knowledge of this group of fish and raising interest among aquarists. The ÖVVÖ XNP project will continue to treat northern platyfish with special attention.

The meeting resulted in substantial fish transfers, too: 20 X. meyeri coming from Hungary to Czech Republic, 120 X. couchianus leaving Czech Republic for Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and France and 45 X. meyeri moving from France to Belgium. Congratulations to all efficient breeders and thanks for everyone's help!
